Islamic Education and Life History: The Case of a Sudanese Teacher

Abstract

Colonialism produced global circuits that were foundational to the development of globalization in the postcolonial era (Gandhi, 1998; McCallum & Faith, 2005; Wolf, 1982). Part and parcel to these dynamics was human migration from one region to another, a phenomenon encompassing both students and teachers up to the present. The purpose of this study is to explore the life history of a Quran and Arabic elementary teacher in an Islamic school in Michigan. It is a story that includes her formative years in Sudan and the transformative impact of time and place on her own learning and teaching, particularly in relationship to the subject matter she teaches.
