Scholars disagree on what label is appropriate when discussing sexual orientation and gender identity issues. Some scholars endorse the label ‘LGBT’; whereas others endorse the label ‘sexual minorities’. Research, however, mostly overlooked the views of LGBT youth toward these labels. To address this void, we use data from a recent survey of LGBT youth in Israel (n=408), which includes standardized and open-ended items. Results show majority of youth endorse the label ‘LGBT community’ and criticize ‘sexual minorities’. Females, younger respondents, respondents who disclosed their sexual orientation, and respondents associated with LGBT organizations are more likely to follow this pattern than others. Furthermore, using qualitative data we illustrate six reasons why youth prefer one label over another.
