Adult Perspectives of Learning Musical Instruments

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:45am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Third Level, West Room 302

Abstract

This qualitative study examined how adults describe their experiences of learning instruments. Fifteen adults who were learning instruments were recruited via community music groups and private instrumental teachers. Analyses of semi-structured interview data identified adults’ prior experiences in music, their motivations to learn instruments and goals, learning strategies they employ, the benefits that they attribute to their engagement in musical activities and challenges faced. This examination of adults’ experiences of learning music informs instructors of instrumental music about why adults choose to learn instrument, their perspectives of learning and teaching, as well as the strategies that they use to engage in learning. Findings provide insight into the ways instructors might adjust pedagogy to meet the needs of adult music learners.
