Memberships, Voting, Social Trust, and Online Participation in Emerging Adulthood

Abstract

Larger civically minded proportions were found for those with a college degree for all measures. When life stage was considered, proportions continued to be larger for older adult college graduates for all measures, but only Memberships and Social Trust proportions were larger for emerging adult college graduates. Interestingly because older adults were generally more civically engaged, a slightly larger proportion and greater effects for Online Participation was found for emerging adults (b= .535, SE=.205, t-test= 2.610, p=.009). When life stage (18 to 29 years) and educational attainment were together in a logistic model for Voting, degree became insignificant and the association between EA and Voting became the strongest found (b= -1.501, SE=.278, t-test= -5.408, p≤. 001).
