Abstract

This paper provides the foundation for the symposium and offers a general background for subsequent topics within the session. Specifically, this paper discusses the following issues: (1) The theoretical and practical considerations behind the initiative of the large-scale study conducted after PISA 2009; (2) the design of the study, including assessment framework, variable selection, development of measures and/or questionnaires, sampling procedure, and the plan and methods of data analysis; (3) the overall status of achievement test scores (mathematics and general problem solving) at different levels (student, classroom, school and city) across the selected cities in China; (4) the follow-up analyses on the correlates of student achievement scores. By combining the results of Shanghai from PISA 2009 and those from the current study, the analyses address issues that are of special interests to the general audience such as: What do Chinese students really know and what can they do? To what degree do the results of Shanghai-China from PISA 2009 represent the status of Chinese education as a whole? What are those influential characteristics/factors within the Chinese education system that undergird these results?
