Abstract

Based on a model of rational number with splitting or equal partitioning as a core construct, we designed Refraction, a free, online fraction game that allows students to explore creating fractions, finding common denominators, fraction addition, and multiplication. In a pilot study, 35 elementary school students played Refraction over a seven-week period. We found significant improvement on students’ scores on a fraction pre and post-test, and we found a significant decrease in the time it took students to solve challenge levels in the game.
