The Role of Education in Combating Extremism: The Case of England

Abstract

The aftermath of terrorist events such as 9/11 and bombings in Bali and London has highlighted the need for education systems to combat extremisms. The role of educational practitioners is critical, but the challenge for those working in and beyond schools lies in fulfilling this responsibility in everyday practice. The aim of this paper is to set out how this challenge can be met. We report on research from England into approaches that help young people to build resilience to extremism, and provide evidence-based, practical advice on the key ingredients and support factors that will help teachers to meet this challenge with growing confidence. We then examine recent changes to education policy that relate to this controversial and sensitive area.
