The proposed paper presents an ecologically informed approach for elucidating the character and scope of K-5 social studies instruction taking place in the field. This perspective offered a lens for understanding the degree to which public history institutions actualize social studies learning and how the interaction between dynamic factors as (a) organizational structure and (b) state educational policy contoured elementary social studies practices. Consideration was given to how 239 teacher candidates gauged social studies practices occurring across 6 professional development schools.
