Abstract

This paper presents findings from the evaluation of an employer led scheme aimed at improving the life chances of disadvantaged young people (18-25) through apprenticeships. Based on a longitudinal study conducted in a large city in England, this paper analyzes the apprentices’ experiences of participating in the initiative and its implications for their life chances. The scheme presents an interesting model of workplace learning that contributes to achievement of economic and social goals, not only by improving the employment and training opportunities for the young people but also by creating capacity in the workplace. However, issues pertaining to the sustainability of the scheme, linked with the current economic crisis, raise questions for the long-term inclusion of young people.
