Abstract

The USDA suggests 5 to 9 servings of fruit & vegetables per day, yet only 14% of adults and 9.5% of adolescents in the U.S. meet that recommendation & in Indiana, only 8.8% of adolescents (State, 2009). Garden-based nutrition programs could influence childhood obesity through increasing fruit & vegetable consumption and improving dietary habits, is. Results show Eat Your Way to Better Health, a garden-based nutrition program collaboratively developed by Indiana State Department of Health & Purdue Extension, is a favorable intervention that may increase fruit & vegetable consumption of 3rd grade participants, who reported significantly higher fruit & vegetable consumption after participating in EYWTBH. Corresponding evaluation instruments are unique due to the family component and extensive review.
