Evaluating the Impact of an English Language Arts Curriculum on Students’ Performance on a State Reading Assessment

Tue, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: First Level, East Ballroom A

Abstract

The purpose of this research study was to evaluate the impact of an ELA curriculum on student performance on a state reading assessment over time. A latent growth curve model was applied to the data with the number of years using the ELA curriculum (Num ELA) and ethnicity (minority =yes/no) as predictors of initial status and rate of change. The number of years using the ELA curriculum was not a significant predictor of initial performance or growth on the reading state assessment. However, minority status and the interaction of minority status and Num ELA significantly predicted performance and growth. Limitations included variability in initial cohort performance and the appropriateness of using the state assessment to evaluate growth over time.
