Abstract

In this paper I show the influences of local control, Indian Education Self-Determination philosophy and the field of Ethnomathematics on the development of mathematics education housed under the umbrella of Indian Education. I then show the history and development of local control in a Native American community in South Dakota and look for the impact of local control on the teaching and learning of mathematics at a local K-8 school, Isna-Wica Owayawa.
