Abstract

Computer-based learning environments sometimes fail to sufficiently support learners. Goal setting is discussed as a possibility to set impulses according to learning prerequisites, and hence improve effective learning. Two types of goals to support learning with a computer-based learning environment are outlined. A ‚Learning-Step Goal’ highlights vital actions in the learning process, a ‚Utility Goal’ emphasizes future situations for which the learning content will be vitally important. An experiment conducted with 159 students showed that a Learning-Step Goal could improve the learning outcomes, and helped directing the effort. The Utility Goal had no positive effects on the training, compared to a control group. Concluding, goal setting proved effective in computer-based learning, which reveals a promising field for future research.
