Development of ACTIV (Adapted Captioning Through Interactive Video) 1.0 Through Design Research: Innovative Form of Learning for Students With Various Abilities and Needs

Abstract

Driven by the legal mandates to access general curriculum and desires to improve educational outcomes for children with various abilities and needs, Adapted Captioning through Interactive Video innovative software was created. The development of ACTIV 1.0 tool followed the iterative design research framework to incorporate cycles of investigation and analysis into the refinement of the innovative instructional technology. As a result of intertwined qualitative and quantitative studies, the final prototype of ACTIV 1.0 was created to allow teachers to upload a video and generate a time-stamped transcript; edit the transcript; add regular, highlighted text, and picture-symbol captions; add visual cues; create multiple-choice quizzes; and tag each question to the segment in the video containing the correct answer for easy reviewing.
