This case study examines BRICK, a new teacher-initiated school reform model, and considers the effectiveness of implementing particularized school leadership structures, pedagogical practices, extending learning time, professional development and community partnerships in the city of Newark, New Jersey, a high-poverty urban area. A mixed-method research design was utilized. The findings indicate that during the initial implementation year, the shared school-based knowledge about this particular school model is in the process of developing. The beginnings of a significant shift in culture and practice can be observed at the BRICK Avon Academy. Recommendations are included for education and policy leaders who seek to advance reform, innovation, and transformation models and strategies in urban public school systems, like the Newark Public Schools.
