In response to the need to address equity and access to high-quality prekindergarten, a populous southern state began implementing a statewide prekindergarten program in 2006. The state also requires screening within the first month of kindergarten to determine children’s readiness. A large urban district has increased access to prekindergarten since 2009 and has hired some CDA-credentialed staff. Independent research staff conducted observations using the Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS). Preliminary results indicate Instructional Support is lowest in classes taught by CDA instructors and teachers new to the profession or in their first year of teaching prekindergarten. The observation data and readiness rates of children attending the district’s classes will be analyzed when state screening data are available in fall 2011.
