Changing the Narrative: Dissecting Content and Structure Through Historical Thinking

Abstract

In this qualitative case study, we examine elementary preservice teachers’ understandings’ of the historical narrative as it is altered by the use of historical thinking. The analysis juxtaposition traditional narratives (e.g. individual achievement and motivation) alternative narratives (e.g. those attentive to empathy and race, class, and gender) in determining the influence of more critical uses of historical thinking.
