Paper Summary

Social Semiotics at Display: A Multimodal Analysis of a Child’s Writing

Mon, April 16, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Sheraton Wall Centre, Floor: Third Level, North Parksville

Abstract

Kress (2008) asserted that the written text has always held a central position in communicating meaning and visual and other modes as peripheral. The multimodal perspective, however, repositions all modes to be equally important. The purpose of this paper is to explore how notions of multimodality and social semiotics may be used to analyze one child’s drawings and writings over a four year period.
