Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 10:15am, Vancouver Convention Centre, Floor: Second Level, West Room 223

Abstract

He Kakano is a professional development project combining indigenous community experieinces and in-school reflections which contribute to cycles of inquiry that are critical in nature and action oriented. The project has an explicit focus on improving culturally responsive leadership and teacher practices that ensure Mäori learners enjoy education success as Mäori resulting in improved social, cultural and academic outcomes of Maori students. Close to 100 secondary school principals having applied to participate in He kakano are in varying degrees saying to know about the educational disparities between Maori and Non-Maori, is not enough. This paper provides a critical overview of internal logic of He Kakano and presents some of the key findings as we approach midpoint of the project.
