Abstract

This study explored several individual and institutional factors related to African American and Hispanic American faculty’s tenure in postsecondary institutions. Data came from National Study of Postsecondary Faculty (NSOPF: 04), by National Center for Education Statistics. Findings revealed that factors such as gender, marital status, education, publications, time on instruction, and research fields were related to the tenure status. Compared with Whites, African American and Hispanic American faculty were less likely to hold a tenured position. The study calls for greater understanding of African American and Hispanic American faculty and the need to address equity issues facing faculty of color in higher education.
