The purpose of this research project is to illustrate that participatory design is an educational tool that can include students in the design process through two case studies involving students at the University of British Columbia. The initial goal was to create a project that raised critical questions about where, how and what we teach. The project also sought to empower and inspire students and teachers to transform their teaching and learning practices and paradigms through a landscape design action research project. The project provided a forum for exploring community based action research, community service learning, and community-university relationships. Through the case studies commonalities between the approaches to action-based and experiential learning are outlined.
