Factors Influencing Preservice Teachers’ Decisions to Participate in an Early Field Experience Abroad

Abstract

This phenomenological study explored factors that impact pre-service teachers’ decisions to participate in an early field experience abroad and how the structure of the experience impacts their perceptions about cultural diversity and global engagement. For the group of ten students in this case study, it was determined that for this group, cost, location, family support, and timing were factors influencing their decision to participate. It was also determined that instructor’s supervisory style, organization of the program, connection to the other participant, positive cultural experiences, and ability to accomplish expected outcomes influence participant’s perceptions.
