This paper describes an independent evaluation of the Intel Reader, a text reading technology used to improve the comprehension of two social studies passages and a popular novel. Two randomized, controlled, crossover experiments were conducted in which adolescents with learning disabilities were randomly assigned to a sequence of treatments with and without the Intel Reader, either first using the Intel Reader and then not using the Intel Reader, or first not using the Intel Reader and then using the Intel Reader. The results showed that the Intel Reader significantly improved performance on the more difficult passage (effect size = .92). No effect was found for the less difficult passage or on the popular novel.
