Valerie J. Janesick will discuss her book on oral history as a useful qualitative technique which captures ordinary individual's life stories. Her book describes innovative ways to use oral history interviews through the metaphor of choreography. Her discussion of creative strategies for data collection, use of internet inquiry techniques such as Skype interviewing, writing techniques and use of photography and film to tell a story will be discussed. Using interview transcripts, documents, and photographs to extend storytelling through poetry is a major focus. Finally using oral history as a social justice project will be addressed with examples of oral history excerpts from hurricane Katrina victims and 9/11 first responders.
