The Implementation and Use of Middle-Level Common Planning Time

Abstract

This paper examines quantitative survey data from Phase II of the MLER SIG’s National Common Planning Time Project. Data were collected from five middle-level schools in a Midwestern community. These schools are similar in demographics and learning outcomes. Practices and perceptions of common planning time (CPT) were examined. While nearly all teachers report having CPT, the usage of their CPT varies. Teachers report that their teams spend the majority of their CPT in discussing student behavior problems/issues, discussing student learning problems/issues, and planning special team activities. The use of CPT to integrate curriculum and plan/coordinate student assignments and assessments is reported at a much lower level.
