This concept paper considers the plight of young people born into a neoliberal culture that regards them as surplus to material requirement. Hope is placed within the constructs of ‘new learning’ but then diminishes in the reality of the inequalities to be found within urban settings. The paper suggests that innovative teaching alone will not challenge neoliberal agenda, but neoliberalism itself, and the inequities it gives rise to, must be exposed. References to Marxist ideology serve as a critical lens through which to analyze and question the hegemony of neoliberalism.
