Abstract

This study examines students’ incorporation of Habits of Mind (HOM) strategies at a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). Survey instruments investigated students’ academic behaviors and attitudes specific to Bernard’s HOM (Bernard, 2006).This concept was adapted by the iFALCON program as an initiative to increase student engagement and success. This study included 1,182 students enrolled in courses taught by faculty who received training on how to incorporate iFALCON into institution. Results indicated that students developed a set of academic behaviors based on iFALCON and students believed the iFALCON strategies contributed to their success. This model has been effective in increasing student engagement for underrepresented students. Implications and recommendations for program improvements and educational policy are discussed.
