The lack of a specific and common understanding of key elements of teaching has impeded the progress of research and practice in teaching and teacher education for decades. Our group, the Core Practice Consortium, takes an innovative view on the power of education research by collaboratively defining and enacting the core practices of teaching and teacher education across institutions. Our work is innovative in two ways: (1) by focusing on the work of teaching, we aim for a common language of practice, and (2) we reimagine how teacher education might be re-organized to put practice at its center. This work is highly relevant to researchers, teacher educators, teachers, and policy makers, as it focuses on the central activities of teaching.
