Exploring the Intersectionality of Race, Sexuality, and Citizenship in a Cohort of Educators

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Marriott, Floor: Sixth Level, Indiana/Iowa

Abstract

Despite progress in Canadian law on issues relating to sexual orientation, this study paints a different reality of Canada when examining the difficult experiences of gay men. This study examines one aspect of gay male educator diversity (i.e., immigrant context) in order to analyze the demographic changes in culture, language and history taking place among teaching staff and suggest implications for administration. The purposes of this study are to explore what kinds of oppressive behaviours target gay male, immigrant educators in their educational institutions and communities, and ascertain the responses of the educators to these behaviours. Findings suggest that study participants silence or downplay their race, sexuality and citizenship in the workplace due to professional expectations that screen out plurality.
