Although implementing robust college and career pathways is a complex process, some high schools have achieved success. In this case study, we focused upon the leadership practices of formal leaders in guiding successful implementation of a career academy model in one urban high school, utilizing distributed leadership as a theoretical framework. School leaders were effective in establishing business partnerships, tapping expertise of faculty and business representatives to serve in leadership roles and build leadership capacity, and creating effective structures to support individual, professional, and organizational learning. This study is significant because of its singular focus upon leadership practices as part of college and career pathways implementation and its contribution to the growing body of research on distributed leadership.
