Predicting Musical Self-Concept and Music Participation

Sat, April 18, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

Using existing data from a survey study on music participation, the purpose of this study was to examine variables that could predict music self-concept and music participation. Specifically, the research questions for this project are:
1. How well do the variables of gender, instrument choice, family musical background, and perceived cost of music participation predict musical self-concept?
2. How well do these same variables predict participation in elective music classes?
Using a linear regression model, family musical background and perceived cost to participation uniquely and significantly predicted musical self-concept. A logistic regression model indicated family background, perceived cost, and self-concept predicted participation. The paper discusses the implications of how these variables interact and share variance.
