Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Swissotel, Floor: Event Centre First Level, Zurich F

Abstract

This study was designed to conduct exploratory analyses that might advance our understanding of the development of Higher Order Thinking Skills in higher education. Mixed-methods research design was used to gather data from scenarios administered to 227 freshmen and seniors at a faculty of education in a Turkish university and from interviews with 18 students and 4 instructors. Data analysis indicated that university education helped students develop cognitive skills, albeit not at the desired level. The findings present recommendations to policy makers, curriculum developers, and instructors to ascertain structured learning experiences that would lead to intended results in developing these skills.
