Repertoire Selection for Concert Band: Preservice Music Teachers' Perceptions and Development of Knowledge

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore how pre-service music teachers describe their development of knowledge regarding the repertoire selection process for concert bands. An interpretive case study methodology was and research questions included: a) How do participants describe the role and function of repertoire in band class? b) How do participants describe their criteria for evaluating the artistic, aesthetic and educational merit of a band work? How has this criteria been developed? c) How do participants describe their development of knowledge regarding choosing repertoire in relation to their own music making and pre-service education experiences? The participants in the study (N = 6) represented junior level undergraduate music education students enrolled in full-time.
