Maintaining K-16 collaborations is an important strategy for improving college opportunity in urban high schools. This study examines what factors facilitate collaboration across a wide range of constituents. We draw upon interviews from 26 counselors and 52 teachers in 10 schools to identify principles for enhancing functioning partnerships. Our findings suggest successful collaboration depends on 1.) a profound awareness and appreciation for the expertise each stakeholder brings to the partnership, 2.) intimate knowledge and understanding of school settings, and 3.) improving the capacity-enhancing properties of school-based agents. Rather than being at odds, varied skills and resources can complement one another to foster co-dependence, which is necessary to bring about transformative systemic change.
