Pushing Against White Privilege: U.S. and U.K. Racial-Minority Students in Majority-White Schools

Fri, April 17, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Marriott, Floor: Sixth Level, Purdue/Wisconsin

Abstract

The authors present a comparative analysis of racial minority students’ experiences in majority White schools in the U.S. and U.K. The two studies document the treatment of racial minority students in schools that epitomize strongholds of White privilege through differential teacher-student relationships, student-student interactions, and school policies and practices. Through an analysis of students’ perceptions of their schools and the re-telling of their schooling experiences, the researchers articulate the impact of race and racism on the schooling experiences of racial minority students in majority White public schools. An exploration into the maintenance of White privilege in majority White schools helps educators to understand the supports and challenges interwoven in their education experiences, and their impact on students’ academic outcomes.
