The Women in My Life and What They Taught Me About Teaching: A Critical Race Perspective

Abstract

In this paper, using autoethgraphic/critical race counternarratives I draw on the personal and professional experiences of my grandmothers, my mother, my sister and a former teacher teach to provide a historical and contemporary analysis of how their experiences and pedagogical practices have informed mine. By examining the transformative pedagogy of the five women in my life, I juxtapose their story with mine to celebrate our education success with students especially with those students who have been labeled “hard to teach.” The intention of this research through my narrative is that we may better understand how to more effectively prepare teachers to draw on cultural and historical knowledge of their students with an intended outcome to successfully teach all students.
