Maintaining Our Prestige and Heritage: Teacher Education in Today's Culture

Abstract

Teachers have endured an uphill battle to obtain and maintain prestige and legitimacy in relation to other professions. Critics of teacher education programs debate whether an advanced degree filled with methods courses are beneficial versus having teachers learn by being in the classroom. The findings also suggest that teacher education programs should be designed to fulfill necessary standards not only for students but for teachers as well. The findings reveal that in regards to best practices teacher education programs should focus on the growth and development of the student.
