Experiences of African American Women in Graduate STEM Programs at Predominantly White Institutions

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Silver Level, Horner

Abstract

Research indicates that under-represented women of color enter college with strong STEM interests, but have lower rates of persistence and retention in STEM programs. Findings from earlier studies indicate that the campus atmosphere at predominantly White institutions (PWIs) impacts the academic and social experiences of women of color studying in STEM fields. These experiences include racial stereotyping and discrimination, and isolation from peers and faculty members. The researchers seek to understand the racism experiences of women of color in graduate STEM programs at mid-Atlantic and southern public PWIs.
