The Promise of Art-Based Scholarship for Educational Research

Sun, April 19, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

In this paper, I want to explore the idea that art practice can function, within certain situations, as a form of scholarship; and further, I want to suggest that the things that art does in research inquiries might be better understood as scholarly in nature than research in orientation. This is particularly the case when research is viewed as a disciplined, ordered, purposeful and systematic way of coming to know something about the world, and scholarship is perceived as a form of creative work that is receptive to thought and cultivates and nurtures it, without insisting that knowledge ought to be created to support or abandon previous understandings, or particular truth regimes.
