Latina/o Language-Minority Students With Learning Disabilities: How Intersections of Difference Mediate In- and Out-of-School Literacy Practices

Fri, April 17, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: East Tower - Purple Level, Riverside West

Abstract

Despite the increased attention to subpopulations of students there is little attention given to students that do not fit neatly into one subcategory, fragmenting Latina/o language minorities (LMs) with learning disabilities (LDs) into either being a student with LD or a LM student. Rarely are their educational needs as Latina/o LMs with LD met fluidly. This qualitative study examines intersections of ethnicity, language, and ability differences across in and out of school contexts. In my study I used cultural historical activity theory and microethnographic analysis methods with video data in order to create deep, nuanced understandings of how ethnicity, language, and ability differences mediate new learning in the new literacies at home and school for Latina/o LMs with LD
