Building on prior research focusing on the role of social content goals, the present study extended previous research by examining the independent and joint roles of social achievement goals and need satisfaction for relatedness in facilitating academic adjustment and achievement. Social achievement goals and need satisfaction for relatedness have not been examined together in previous research. The results of the current study revealed that both social achievement goals and need satisfaction for relatedness make an independent and unique contribution to explaining academic-related outcomes. The significant interaction effect between social development goals and needs satisfaction for relatedness on academic self-efficacy revealed that a high level of academic self-efficacy can be established only when these two social factors are both strongly supportive.
