This qualitative study examines adolescent girls’ voluntary participation in a young writers’ festival. This paper focuses on the ways in which students took up the invitation to write and share a piece of work that was not tied to a class, a grade, or the daily curriculum. This paper looks closely at students’ spoken and written responses to this invitation in an effort to re-conceptualize and revise typical approaches to the teaching and learning of secondary writing in-school. I examine the roles, values, and purposes, as represented in talk and writing by high school students across grade levels, of writing in school.
