An Integrative Review and Pilot Survey of Disciplinary Literacy Instruction in Secondary Settings

Sun, April 19, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Sheraton, Floor: Fourth Level, Chicago VI&VII

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to present results of an integrative literature review (Torraco, 2005) and follow-up survey which explore possibilities for the integration of theory and practice related to disciplinary literacy instruction in secondary content area settings. Disciplinary literacy (DL) has been put forth as a solution to the stagnant literacy development of adolescents over the past 30 years (Shanahan & Shanahan, 2008; Moje, 2008; Lee & Spratley, 2010). However, definitions vary and scholars advocate for the idea from differing perspectives.
