65.012 - The Quest for Justice Through Civic Education in Multicultural Nations

Sun, April 19, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Gold Level, Toronto

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

Global migration and the increasing racial, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity in nation-states around the world are causing educators to rethink how civic education can help vulnerable and victimized groups attain justice. The worldwide ethnic revitalization movements are challenging assimilationist notions of citizenship education and insisting that diverse cultures be reflected in the school, college, and university curriculum. In this session, civic educators in different parts of the world will share perspectives, issues, theory, research, and strategies for implementing citizenship education courses and programs in schools that will facilitate the structural inclusion and quests for justice by students from diverse ethnic, racial, linguistic, and religious groups into their nation-states.
