61.012 - Language(s) in Schools as a Social Imaginary

Sun, April 19, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Hyatt, Floor: West Tower - Gold Level, Regency C

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

This session presents cases that illustrate various ways of knowing about the role of language in education. Presenters push on the exigencies of accountability in English only that schools face today and capture the significance of the democratization of knowledge and knowledge production, while reconsidering social justice and imagination anew. These case studies in schools (K-adults, immigrant and non-immigrant populations – such as Chicano, Puerto Rican, African American, and Native American) illustrate social imagination in motion -- through film, PhotoVoice, digital technologies, the spoken word, and language brokering -- and transformations of policies and practices through the development of agency and leadership.
