Abstract

In an era of increased appetite for data about colleges, universities, training programs, and other educational institutions, there is a growing need for more focused attention on the intended uses of rankings, their methodological strengths and weaknesses, and the underlying assumptions about how individuals and organizations interpret their meaning. Research on these questions could lead to improved understanding and more effective mechanisms for providing useful information to multiple users for multiple purposes.
