Abstract

This symposium will address ways to stimulate and enhance international collaborative research in education research and in the social and behavioral sciences more generally. The session will take as a point of departure the report of a Workshop on Building Infrastructure for International Collaborative Research in the Social and Behavioral Sciences held in September 2013 under the auspices of the National Research Council. The symposium will open with an initial overview of core issues and ideas in the report by Dr. Torney-Purta, co-chair of the workshop. Discussants from the international research community will then provide brief, rapid fire responses to key ideas set in the report and offer guidance for international collaborative research across diverse countries, cultures, and arenas of study. Special attention will be given by discussants to best practices for the inclusion of graduate students and early career scholars in international collaboration. After open discussion with audience participation, the session will conclude with all participants offering 2 to 3 main recommendations for fostering international research collaborations on study design, data collection, analysis, and writing across countries or continents.
