The surge of e-books and apps into the early childhood world is rapidly changing the traditional early book experience and potentially how literacy is motivated and taught in the early years. Already digital books and game-like apps make up close to 20% of market share in the children’s book trade worldwide, and publishers are actively cultivating an e-reader generation. As digital content on mobile technologies takes on an increasingly large market-share, the need to understand the influence (positive, null or negative) on early literacy development and learning has grown ever more urgent.
