The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) is one of the largest and most multicultural school boards in North America. The TDSB produces important research opportunities through its extensive data collection and its unique urban backdrop of shifting political landscapes and economic stratification. This session includes research studies employing TDSB data and highlights how myriad social forces interact and shape opportunities for student achievement. Papers address critical and contentious issues currently debated in the field of public education. The social construction of special education identification, intersectional analyses of race, gender and class across Toronto and Chicago metropolises, students’ experience of belonging and exclusion in school, post-secondary access, and pathways to continuing education will be explored.
