Session Type: Symposium
Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), which enroll 25% or more Latina/o students, are the largest and fastest growing category of Minority-Serving Institutions in the U.S. Despite their increasing prevalence, HSIs have received limited research and policy attention. This symposium brings together several authors of a newly edited book to discuss theoretical perspectives and empirical research concerning HSIs as distinct organizational contexts in higher education. Together, the panelists will address organizational characteristics, identities, and student outcomes in HSIs and engage the audience in a conversation to identify and refine current research directions. Participants will grapple with questions including how to assess the institutional performance of HSIs and the extent to which HSIs are “serving” their largely Latina/o, first-generation, and low-income populations.
